Donuts

Every Saturday morning I eat 2, sometimes, a lot of the times, 3 donuts. I. Love. Donut Saturday. I think more than my toddler even. Definitely more than my 4 month old; he’s a sleeper and by 7:30 or so I’m ready to wake everyone up and head out for treats. Also, I don’t think he’s caught on to the concept of donut Saturday quite yet.

A chocolate sprinkle long john… eaten upside down so the icing hits your tongue first and there is just a little bit of crunch 🤤 Pair that with sips of coffee in between…. As the kids would say, ‘it slaps.’ Saturday mornings are a genuine delight at our house.

Donuts on Saturday are a consistent nutrition habit that I’ve built because it works for me. I am not a ‘savory foods’ person. I don’t crave fast food, pizza, chips or burgers. If I left it all to chaos
I’d eat donuts, cake, cookies and ice cream on repeat.

Likely, I’d eventually get physically sick of it I’m sure but you get the point…I like sweet stuff. I get to enjoy donut Saturday because of the overall daily habits I’ve formed in the rest of my week.

I look forward to my coffee every morning. I use a natural sweetener with a sugar free creamer. My favorite pairing at the moment is either a Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Larabar or homemade Banana Bread. Both foods pack some carbs and fat but I wouldn’t call them a treat, they’re just food.

Food that makes sense in my day because I have a plan for my day. I already know and have prepared what I will be having for lunch, dinner and snacks. When I look at my whole day of eating I can consistently balance things I want with things I need.

I know I need protein, so I’ve also had egg whites with veggies at breakfast. Speaking of, I know I need veggies so there is broccoli or leafy greens ready in my pre-prepped lunch and dinner.

I want something sweet after each meal so I’ve chosen lean meat sources like venison, lean beef, or chicken breasts at meal times leaving me fats for a piece of chocolate or peanut butter in the afternoon.

I know I want oatmeal with bananas and whipped cream before bed so I put brown rice in my meals leaving me room for carbs at night.

There’s a bit of variation to my meals and snacks week to week. But honestly, I make 1000s of decisions in a day as a mom, a teacher, a human being. And knowing what I’ll be eating without having to stress or decide on something is a relief.
