Support

When I was pregnant with my first baby the pandemic began and the world shut down. I had no access to prenatal classes. I had a few virtual doctor’s appointments. My in-person prenatal visits were limited. I felt fairly alone in my pregnancy.

I read a few birthing books. I began listening to some birthing podcasts; but in large part the best thing I had going for me was access to a couple of wonderful doula friends. A doula is a trained birthing assistant who offers both physical and emotional support to the birthing person throughout all stages. A doula can give advice to mothers. She guides them through big decisions and keeps them advised of all the information they need to make informed decisions about their body and baby.

A doula by default is a caregiver. They are bonded to their mamas through one of the most transformational periods of their life. They can be an advocate for the mom’s wishes, they can remind the mom of how strong she is to help them carry out their birthing preferences in the event that the mom is struggling to advocate for themselves.

I worked with one doula specifically for prenatal massage and exercises to keep me comfortable throughout my pregnancy. But due to the pandemic it was hard to meet in person so we unfortunately had limited visits.

The other doula I knew had been a previous student of mine who was working as a labor and delivery nurse at the time. She was just beginning her work in the doula world while simultaneously trying to navigate a healthcare career amidst a health crisis. Her plate was full but her goal to serve pregnant mamas was strong.

She let me message her, facetime her; send her pictures. Always eager to help she would promptly respond with helpful advice to ease my worries. Her support got me through very unknown territory. Sometime between my first and second pregnancy that she became a full-time doula.

I cannot stress enough the benefits of having an educated provider unaffiliated with your hospital can be. My doctor and her team are top tier. Exceptional providers. Baby centered care and incredibly supportive of her moms. But as a provider, by default they are limited in the care and time they are able to give their patients.

A doula fills the spaces in between. A doula can be reached within minutes. A doula’s only bias is to honor and educate her mama. A doula is the ultimate example of women supporting women. She takes us back to our roots where we really do have a village.

Mamas if you are looking to work with a doula and want more information leave your info below and I will connect you!
